Interesting conundrum. To optimize customer service, we are compelled to enable all of the technological channels and yet, preserve the personal contact channels.

Michelle, I agree with your comments regarding the movement of many businesses toward communicating with their customers only through automated means. Customers still want to talk to a person when they have a problem or concern. We should view the new technology as a tool to deliver a higher level of convenience, but not as a way to avoid personal contact with our customers. Businesses who maintain strong personal relationships with their customers will be the survivors in the future no matter where technology takes us.

I really appreciated the discussion about how a job description is not sufficient. We are working through a situation at our school where the job description is clear but the employee still does not understand the expectations and skills needed for the job....hence she is under performing. This posting will help us as we move forward in our listing of expectations and developing an evaluation tool.

The real question is whether our industry is prepared either way to hedge risk and exploit opportunities where found. You are correct, time will tell.

I see both appointments as part of Obama's 2012 re-election strategy, rather than as a change of political philosophy. After doing everything possible to disrupt and alienate businesses during his first two years, he is triangulating in an attempt to recapture some of the Middle. If he cared a whit about the business community's needs, healthcare would have been structured much differently and not crammed down. Uncertainties about extension of the tax cuts would have been removed much sooner, also. Will he be successful? I certainly hope not. but time and future events will telll the story.

You bring up an important point that gets lost. In our pursuit for speed and efficiency in our dealings with customers and employees we forget one of the basic signs of respect: taking the time to personally interact.

I agree 100%. Technology is great for the basics. If I need to discuss something important or of value with an associate or a customer I have been picking-up the phone or better yet discussing the matter face to face.

This recession has created a lot of stories for our clients and prospects. Some good, many bad, either way we need to treat them with respect. Face to face communication shows respect for others.

I agree wholeheartedly! While technology is necessary and efficient, nothing takes the place of being able to talk to an actual person.....

I am the head administrator at a private school and I believe the comments today apply to a school as well as a bank!
We need to define who we are and be the best we can be.
I think we are "Amazon"...providing quality education to our community/customers.
